Eugene J. McGowan Jr. - Biography
First-time Director, Producer and Writer, Eugene McGowan Jr., was born in Queens, New York in 1957, and grew up in Northport, New York. During and after high school he worked at his father’s construction company, acquiring skills that enabled him to become an expert carpenter, developing his eye to visualize. In 1978 he embarked on a new career and became a NYC Firefighter. In 1982 he and his high school sweetheart were married and raised three children.
Eugene’s career change was successful as he was quickly promoted through the ranks of Lieutenant, Captain and ultimately to Battalion Chief; becoming one of the youngest FDNY Battalion Chiefs in their 150-year history at the age of forty. In 2003, after serving in the FDNY for 25 years, Gene retired. He and his wife were always interested in the Civil War and in the summer of 2012 they decided to make a film about the real Lincoln. Searching for Lincoln is a culmination of their efforts and of others. The film is a thought-provoking documentary examining the life—and the legacy—of the man considered one of greatest American Presidents of all time.
